Wellness Coaching - Defining Wellness

November 27th, 2007

By Laura Young

Recently I was involved in assisting in the curriculum development for a wellness program for individuals with chronic medical conditions at a Chicago area clinic. The process was a marvelous opportunity for me to distill 25 years of work in the fields of health care, coaching, martial arts, yoga, meditation, psychology and philosophy into a cohesive package. As so many individuals are interested in the issue of wellness, I thought I would share my thoughts with you as well. While the early parts of this article speak to those with medical conditions, the latter parts outline my model of wellness independent of medical status.

What do health care professionals define as wellness?

It may come as a surprise to you, but with volumes of criteria established to diagnose medical and psychological illnesses there is no uniform working model of wellness! If you are not content to define health and wellness simply as the absence of disease (or pain), I could not agree with you more. No doubt you have met many individuals in your life who have no apparent disease condition but who are not living balanced, healthy lives. Similarly, there are many examples of individuals with chronic medical conditions who appear to have transcended their disease state to embody what many of us would identify as wellness.

Can I achieve wellness if I have a chronic medical condition?

Wellness does not require that you be free of all medical conditions. That is good news for those of us with bodies! In addition to the reality that accidents and illnesses can impact us profoundly, we are all aging and, of course, we do eventually die. While at least the last two are natural processes, we are not always comfortable discussing these issues in our culture. You may even be wondering why I would bring this up in a discussion on wellness!

Wellness is about embracing the natural unfolding of life.

The author, Byron Katie, states, “When I argue with reality, reality wins, but only 100% of the time.”

If you have a medical condition, it IS a part of your life. Understandably, you have likely spent a good deal of time on a quest to return to “your” life, the life you recall and identified with before your physical condition changed. Your physical condition was a misplaced chapter, maybe accidentally put in your life from someone else’s book! Now, if you could just find the editor-in-chief to take it out so that YOUR story can continue as you were writing it…

Wellness is about embracing YOUR life as it unfolds.

That doesn’t mean that you should become passive or give up. You may be familiar with the Serenity Prayer:

God give me the courage to change what I can

The strength to accept what I cannot

And the wisdom to know the difference.

Wellness is about learning the difference between what you can change and what you cannot and focusing your energies wisely.

You are so much more than the story of your medical condition. Whatever you are experiencing now IS your life. How you relate, or don’t, to your body’s condition and how you embrace or reject exploration your experience will determine the quality and richness of your life, regardless of the state of your body at any given time.

Even if a cure is not possible, healing is always within your reach!

Toward a Model of Wellness:

Most simply, wellness brings a sense of wholeness. Medical conditions are not a uni-dimensional phenomenon. Chronic medical conditions affect an individual physically, socially, psychologically and spiritually. Wellness is an integration of mind, body and spirit so that one has a sense of balance and harmony in life.

Wellness is a lifestyle. As you know, the world appears to be getting more complex every year. Developing a wellness lifestyle will allow you to revitalize and re-energize yourself so that you can continue to thrive in the face of the ongoing external demands of life, preparing you to cope with the changes that tomorrow inevitably brings.

Wellness is more than developing self-soothing techniques to get you through a rough day. You may have heard about or been taught self-help or stress management techniques that focus you internally and teach you ways to improve your self-care. Some people commit to taking hot baths or listening to music regularly to relax. Others write affirmations and stick them on their mirrors to promote positive thinking. Others may take up journaling. While these types of techniques are useful and certainly have their place in decreasing stress they can fall short for many people. First, new habits are hard to maintain. Just look at how many New Year’s Resolutions end up abandoned in 3 weeks time! Secondly, too often these techniques are used in isolation and don’t seem to relate to how a person is living day to day in relation to their family, their workplace or their circle of friends. The techniques then become little more than bandages for larger problems in a person’s life.

Wellness promotes self-understanding. You are not your body. You are not your thoughts. You are not your emotions. One key aspect of wellness is to learn how to control your thoughts and emotions. This does not mean that you stop having them, but that you stop being controlled by them. Being able to stand outside yourself and gain understanding of your life situation and your reactions to it is a critical piece of gaining control in your life.

Wellness promotes a sense of flow. In our “GO GO GO” culture, we tend to over-emphasize external productivity. Many people identify themselves as “Type A” and take pride in that. As a result, learning how to pace is a big challenge for many people. Another component of wellness is to be aware, respectful of and in tune with your flow between external productivity and rest periods. A well-paced life allows for a sustainable level of productivity so that surges of effort followed by extended “crashes” no longer define one’s life.

Wellness creates a sense of connection and meaning in life. Self-care and self-understanding alone do not define wellness. You are part of a larger system. You may have a family, friends, co-workers, a church or other community. Beyond our human connections, we also have connections with nature and you may also have a sense of spiritual connection to something greater than yourself.

Wellness is mind-body-spirit integration that promotes self-care and self-understanding and connects your life to the larger world. It is a state of being joyfully and enthusiastically engaged with your life, even when it doesn’t turn out exactly as you had planned.

Is Hoodia the Key to Weight Loss?

November 24th, 2007

by Kathy Joyce

Hunger and the desire to eat is a great disadvantage if you are trying to lose weight! Cream cakes, sweets, biscuits and all other delicious wonderful foods seem to be everywhere when you are trying to forget about the pleasure of eating.

Wouldn’t it be great to take a pill or potion that stops that craving for food in it’s tracks and enable you to shed those pounds. There are many weight loss pills on the market that claim to help you lose weight but the one that’s being talked about most for it’s astounding effects is hoodia.

Hoodia is a succulent cactus type plant and can grow up to a metre in height. There are many different species but the one that has the appetite suppressant qualities is the gordonii species.

It was used hundreds of years ago in the Kalahari desert region of South Africa by tribesmen as a thirst quencher and natural appetite suppressant during long hunting trips. It keeps you feeling full after a meal for longer and also gives you a feeling of wellbeing.

The active ingredient in gordonii hoodia is a molecule called p57. It works by sending signals to the part of the brain that controls appetite and cravings that you are full. It does this by mimicking the effects of glucose which gives energy and a feeling of satisfied fullness, so even after a small meal you will feel full for much longer.

The desire to snack between meals which is often habbit will disappear. You won’t need that mid morning bar of chocolate or afternoon cake any more while you take hoodia. However you may need to take it for a couple of days before you start to experience it’s benefits.

Some hoodia products are mixed with green tea. This is fine as not only is green tea a powerful antioxidant but it has the added effect of increasing initial weight loss due to the caffeine. Tea is a diuretic and causes you to lose water in the body by urinating more often. Water stored in the body adds extra weight.

The greater the ratio of green tea to hoodia the cheaper it is. The best mix of hoodia to green tea is 20:1

Hoodia can be purchased in tablet or liquid form, but you will find it more beneficial to take it in liquid form as not only is it easier to swallow but it’s also much more readily absorbed into the body and you will notice it’s effects almost straight away.

Only about 20% of ingredients are absorbed in tablet form, the remainder is wasted as it’s passed through the body.

Hoodia should be taken as part of a healthy diet which includes lots of fresh vegetables and fruit. Exercise should also be a major part of your weight loss regime. Don’t rely on hoodia as a quick fix for losing weight as it’s vital that you get plenty of essential vitamins and minerals from a healthy diet to remain fit and healthy.

I am a Breast Cancer Survivor

September 8, 2007

Every day your body produces 300 million cells. It is widely known by scientist and health professional that the key to good health and well-being is diet and supplementing. Your body needs powerful antioxidants, vitamins, trace and ultra minerals to fight free radicals in your daily nutritional program. You can defend your body cells from free radical. Free radicals from the air you breathe, the food you eat and the water you drink. Free radicals can damage your cells and increase the aging process. The stronger the cells become the younger you will look and feel.

Scientist recommened that all adults take daily vitamins based on two important factors - the recognition that Americans do not recieve enough vitamins from their diet alone and vitamin supplementation plays an important role in long term-health. you also need a balanced diet, exercise regularly and supplements.

My health is very important to me. I need to stay healthy for my huband and son. Breast Cancer is a deadly and serious disease. I take supplements to maintain health and wellness. I look for a great tasting liquid product. Also important in choosing a product is the ORAC value, which is the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity . The higher the ORAC value, the stronger the compound’s capacity and the greater its ability to prevent free radical damage at the cellular level. If it is recommened by Top Doctors for it bioavailibity, efficacy, nutritional value on label, all inclusive formula, absorption rate, and most of all convenience. I also check if product listed in prestigious 2007 PDR (physicians desk reference).

Herbs – A Rich Source Of Antioxidants

November 18th, 2007

For thousands of years, civilizations in every corner of the world have been using herbs to heal, to energize, to prolong life, and improve their overall good health and well being.

Today as we analyze herbs active components and examine them with the objective experiments that define modern science, we are finding that they indeed have the power to energize you and to help you lead a longer, healthier life.

According to researchers with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, herbs are among the richest sources of antioxidants.

Herbs have higher antioxidant activity than fruits, vegetables and some spices, the researchers say. Oregano ranked highest among the more familiar herbs, but dill, thyme, rosemary and peppermint also had a very high antioxidant capacity. One tablespoon of fresh oregano contains the same antioxidant activity as one medium-sized apple says Shiow Y. Wang, Ph.D., the study’s lead researcher and a biochemist with the USDA’s Beltsville Agricultural Research Center in Beltsville, Md.

Their findings appear in the November, 2006 print issue of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Chemical Society, the world’s largest scientific society.

The science community believes that consumption of antioxidant-rich foods reduces damage to cells and biochemicals from free radicals - charged molecules that are generated by a variety of sources including pollution, UV sunlight, and environmental toxins. This may slow down, prevent, or even reverse certain diseases that result from cellular damage including cancer, heart disease and stroke, and perhaps even slow down the natural aging process.

Fruits, vegetables and whole grains have long been considered as a rich source of antioxidants. Now, herbs have emerged as a quick and easy way to get a concentrated source of antioxidants — without all the extra calories of whole foods, Wang says.

So go ahead and enjoy a little dash and sprinkle of the familiar leafy or powdered versions of herbs to add flavor to your favorite meats and vegetables. Have a sip of some potent antioxidant herbal tea. Even better, try supplementation with botanical solid or fluid extracts. This is your best defense against illness and premature aging.

However herbs, whatever form they take, should never be a substitute for a balanced diet and pregnant women in particular should consult their physicians before taking herbal supplements.

Nutritional Vitamin Supplements

November 15th, 2007

Not Just Pills

It’s about time you placed your life at a premium. A good life isn’t just about the quantity of life, it’s also about the quality of life. Think about it: you don’t want to be bedridden or a vegetable for the remaining years of your life. You want to be able to live long enough so that you can enjoy the fruits of your labor and your life up close and not on the bed. Of course there are several ways to keep you healthy, the two main things being a healthy diet, and of course, exercise. But there’s nothing wrong with going the extra mile for your health. That can be achieved with the right nutritional and dietary supplements that helps keep your body fit. Supplements make sure that your body has enough of the vitamins it needs to keep functioning at the optimum. Vitamins are natural organic compounds so there’s no danger of consuming supplements that are synthesized and artificial. Everything is pulled from mother nature — plants, specifically, which are basically the only living creatures with the ability to manufacture their own food. We cannot, so we must rely on outside sources to keep ourselves healthy. Of course, we must exercise caution and exercise awareness of what we are taking in and how our intake affects our body.

For vitamins there’s a recommended dietary allowance which differs according to age and state of health. For example, a pregnant woman might be asked to take in specific vitamins to make sure that the fetus develops as healthy as possible with the least possible complications. Also, vitamin deficiencies occur from a nutritionally imbalanced diet. Let’s face it, in a world of processed foods, it’s hard to keep healthy. Vitamin supplements help curb the nutritional imbalance. To know if you are eating well enough, and to pinpoint the specific vitamins your body lacks, the best way is through a blood test. For most people, nutritional supplements that you take everyday and that come with all the basic vitamins and minerals is good enough. There’s no need for a blood test to do this. For others, however, there may already be bodily symptoms that express a certain deficiency. It’s always good to be reminded that an ounce of prevention is definitely worth more than a pound of cure. And prevention can be as simple as swallowing pills packed with vitamins. There have been millions of cases of heart disease and cancer that could’ve been prevented by a simple vitamin.

There is really nothing that can replace a healthy diet as good as — well, a healthy diet. Healthy meals of organic fruits and vegetables will definitely cost less in the long run, besides. However, nutritional supplements still play an important role aside from giving you “very expensive urine.” The human body requires at least 40 essential micronutrients which a healthy diet alone cannot supply.

Of course, too much of a good thing is — bad. You actually might just end up producing “really expensive urine.” It can help prevent cancer and heart disease, but too much of it will not only turn you a shade of yellow or orange, but in some cases can give you liver disease. So make sure to consult a physician to get the best combination of nutritional supplements that will best augment your body.

Herbal Remedies And Supplement Guide

November 12th, 2007

In 1994, herbal products became “dietary supplements,” this means that manufacturers/formulators have to follow certain rules for labeling, promotion and advertising. Herbal manufacturers cannot make certain claims about herbal products. Manufacturers may not promote specific actions and uses for the herbs. You will see that herbs are advertised for their characteristics, but not for their specific functions.

To make matters worse, herb manufacturers can–and do–use different formulas and concentrations.

There are some excellent books out in the market specifically geared to proven herbal remedies. I sugges t you go to your library or your local book store and check out what is available. Also, Amazon has some great books on this subject.

My favorites: The complete Medicinal Herbal – Penelope Ody This is an amazing book. Everyone interested in herbal remedies should own one. And, the second is Maria Treben’s “Health through God’s Pharmacy” There are online Natural Remedy Providers where you can find professionally formulated remedies for almost any existing condition. There are many formulated remedies that also make us of combined herbs.

Use as herbal remedies, and as herbal dietary supplements.

Aloe Vera (Aloe Vera) The Aloe Vera originates from the tropics of Africa. The aloe is used as an antidote to poison arrow wounds. Uses: Gel, ointment, tonic, leaves, powder.

Uses: Chronic skin disorders such as psoriasis, eczema, and acne; sunburn, minor burns, and minor wounds. Aloe tonic taken internally is also a purgative, it promotes bile flow.

Recommended use: For skin disorders, apply a small amount of gel to the wound or skin complaint three times a day. The gel should be applied until the wound or condition has healed.

The Arthritis Easer: Devil’s Claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) There are two main types of arthritis: osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Uses: Chronic joint, muscle, or tendon pain. Devil’s claw is a potent anti inflammatory that has been compared with cortisone. It works better with Osteoarthritis than with rheumatoid arthritis.

What they say: Devil’s claw is often as effective as the prescription and over-the-counter drugs used to treat arthritis–minus the side effects. It has been compared with cortisone.

The Good-for-Your Heart Herb: Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna)

Hawthorn is an old traditional herb valued for its astringency. This herb was used for diarrhea, menstrual flow, and bleeding.

In the last century its value as a tonic for the heart has been identified.

Uses: May be helpful for those with a family history of cardiovascular disease or who are at high risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Hawthorn relaxes the peripheral blood vessels. It is a cardiac tonic.

Warning: Hawthorn can reduce blood pressure. If you taking blood pressure medication, you may need less of it. Have your health professional monitor your blood pressure medication, if necessary consult with your doctor.

What they say: It is said that high-risk patients look better, feel better, and are better when they take hawthorn regularly.

For Allergies: Nettle (Urtica dioica)

Ah yes, the nettle. I have heard about this herb on a constant basis for the last 20 years. A friend of mine absolutely swears by it. The Stinging Nettles.

This is a standard fold remedy for arthritis and rheumatism. Nettles make a great tonic, and even a healthy vegetable of you gather them when the leaves are still young.

Uses: Allergies, allergic skin rashes, hay fever, and seasonal rhinitis. Also know to lower blood sugar.

How much to take: Tincture 1:5, 1 teaspoon; fluid extract 1:1, 20 drops

How often: Three times a day

How long: Start before allergy season begins, and continue taking it straight through the season or whenever your particular allergy surfaces.

What they say: Nettles is a tonic that can be used even for circulation and milk flow in a new mother.

Tonic For The Liver: Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum)

Milk thistle is another herb I have heard about over the last 20 years. Being of European background, these herbs are like old friends to me.

Uses: Useful for people with liver disease, those who abuse alcohol or drugs or take liver-damaging prescriptions, those working with toxic chemicals, and those with chronic and acute hepatitis

How long: As long as the liver is subject to toxic chemicals, take milk thistle to prevent damage from occurring. It is safe for long-term use.

Drug interactions: None known

What they say: When chronic liver disease or chronic exposure to toxins is the problem, milk thistle is a must.

The Accident Plant: Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) Uses: Sore or injured muscles, joints, or bones; scratches, minor burns, and insect bites

Recommended use, how long: Witch hazel is used topically to encourage and speed healing. Apply the 1:5 tincture to a bandage, and place over the injured area. Allow the dressing to stay in place until the wound or injury heals.

Warning: For external use only

Drug interactions: None known

Headache Prevention: Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium)

Uses: Prevention of migraines and cluster headaches–it’s not useful for treating a headache once it starts.

How long: Remission should begin after 2 months of use. If there has been no improvement after 4 months, discontinue use. The herb can be used indefinitely, though after 2 years, some people no longer find it necessary.

What they say: Many headache sufferers have found permanent relief with this herb.

Read the label carefully to be certain that the product contains the right herb, the right part of the herb, and only that herb. If you’ve taken an herb for the recommended amount of time and it’s not working, discontinue use and consult an herbally trained practioner.

Why Even Take a Multivitamin?

October 31st, 2007

As the baby boomers continue to age, people of all ages are increasingly keen on taking responsibility for their own health and are showing more and more interest in watching their diet and taking vitamin supplements to maintain their health and well-being. In particular, there is a growing awareness of the benefits of health supplements for both young and old.

To scientists, and health conscious people, the fact that we can benefit from supplements has never been in doubt. Yet, many of us are not quite clear what exactly the benefits of taking a daily multivitamin are. Not only do most of us fail to eat a varied and well-balanced diet on a regular basis, at certain times in their lives, many people may require more of certain nutrients than their diets can provide - for example, young children, teenagers, pregnant women, those on vegetarian or poorly designed slimming diets, and chronically ill or elderly people. Furthermore, there are also some nutrients that may be difficult to get in food in adequate amounts and therefore may need to be taken as a supplement by certain people, for example, folic acid for women during pre-conception and in the first three months of pregnancy.

In general, a good daily multivitamin/mineral supplement improves your overall bodily functioning and boosts both your physical and mental health and well-being. Sometimes supplementation with specific nutrients may be more appropriate in order to address any individual specific needs. For example, CoQ10 is especially helpful for those at risk for heart disease, and Vitamins C and E, taken in combination to help ward off Alzheimer’s disease. A multivitamin supplement usually contains the recommended daily dose of a variety of vitamins and other nutrients. Sometimes, multivitamin supplements are formulated for specific age groups, or individual conditions such as pregnancy. Multivitamins also are at their most efficient when they are in liquid form, as the body has been proven to absorb them five times more efficiently than multivitamins in pill form.

Many people report a feeling of general well being when they are taking their daily multivitamins regularly. The individual vitamins and nutrients in a quality daily multivitamin dose delivers to you their specific benefits of each individual vitamin, plus you get the combined (synergistic) benefits of all of the ingredients working together. Vitamin E, for example, a fat-soluble antioxidant vitamin helps to neutralize potentially damaging free radicals in the body and it is particularly important for the protection of cell membranes as well as maintaining healthy skin, heart and circulation, nerves, muscles and red blood cells. Vitamin C on the other hand is water soluble, but like Vitamin E, it is an antioxidant. It helps white blood cells combat infection, is essential for wound healing, for the formation of collagen, for healthy skin, and for the formation of other important structural materials in bones, teeth and capillaries. It also helps with the absorption of iron from plant sources. Vitamins D, K, A, and other nutrients in a multivitamin supplement all have specific beneficial effects on our bodies ranging from minimizing the risks of heart problems to helping to ward off Alzeheimer’s disease.

It is important to take your daily multivitamin in a liquid form regularly to enjoy these benefits to their fullest extent. Vigorous training, for example, increases the production of free radicals in the body. When involved in an exercise program, we should, therefore, increase the intake of antioxidants such as beta-carotene, vitamin C and vitamin E, and ensure you take adequate amounts of the proper vitamins and minerals required to maintain strong, healthy bones and joints such as calcium and iron. Also, older people over 55 years, convalescents, those who consume large amounts of alcohol, those with active, busy lives, people with colds, smokers, those exposed to excessive pollution, athletes and routine aspirin users need to take more daily and regular multivitamins.

A good multivitamin is the foundation of health and nutrition. Take a look at scientific reviews of many of the popular brands for factors such as ingredients, areas of improvement, quality level, and overall value.
